Certified Specialist in Exercise Therapy (SET) - International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA)
Therapeutic exercise involves movement prescribed to correct impairments, restore muscular, neurological, and skeletal function, and/or maintain a state of well-being. Therapeutic exercise is a type of physical activity used to treat or prevent injuries and improve functional outcomes. Exercise Therapy Specialists work with clients who are "in the gap" (after completing their initial physical therapy and would benefit from additional exercise to continue their rehabilitation), or their medical insurance has ended and they have been discharged from physical therapy but need to continue working towards their goals to improve their ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), and want further restoration.
Exercise Therapy has potential to reduce pain, improve muscular strength, balance, and range of motion for individuals with osteoarthritis, post-rehab clients recovering from surgery or sports-related injuries. I will work with you to continue the work of exercise based on the recommendations of the physical therapy and your doctor(s). The medical community recognizes the benefits of movement and knows that activity and movement begets more movement.
We'll apply techniques and exercises to enable your rehabilitation from training injuries, accidents, or chronic diseases. We'll develop the correct exercises to address a client's specific chronic condition (cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, neurological/particularly, stroke recovery, orthopedic, and/or sensory issues). I am patient, caring, and knowledgeable and am willing and able to work with all types of clients that use assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, canes, etc.), and those with cancer or who are pregnant. On occasion and where applicable, I will incorporate aquatics in exercise therapy. We'll address both chronic conditions and isolated issues to get you moving and feeling better. Plus, I'll develop a comprehensive exercise therapy program for you that utilizes adaptive programming principles and techniques if clients have fitness constraints. To begin an exercise therapy program, you will need to obtain written permission from your physician.

Senior Fitness Specialists play a role in helping healthy older adults remain active and healthy. There are currently over 54 million adults over the age of 65 living in the United States, and that number is projected to continue to grow. Currently, the fastest growing age group in the U.S. is people over age 85, and the second fastest is people 100 and over (centenarians). Therefore, as a Certified Senior Fitness Specialist, I have a unique opportunity to work with the growing older adult population and help them stay active and improve their health by providing safe and effective exercise programs. I also address physiological and psychological needs by creating a positive trainer-client relationship to enable older adults in achieving their goals and overcoming obstacles.
Women have different fitness needs across various ages and different life stages, from pregnancy age through menopause and during their senior years due to the impacts of hormonal and physical changes to evolving nutritional needs. I also give consideration to including motivational nudges and common psychological issues in order to meet women's changing fitness and wellness goals.
